Cement tile has become popularly known as encaustic tile however technically speaking this is not the case. Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles in which the pattern is produced not through glaze or pigment colours but through different colours of clay. Since the invention of portland cement in the Nineteenth century, extremely durable tiles have been produced using a combination of cement and natural mineral pigments that take on the look of traditional encaustic tile.
